Mosonmagyaróvár’s thermal water belongs to the five most efficient thermal waters in Europe due to its chemical components. It contains a lot of dissolved salt, alkaline, hydrogen carbonated and chloride thermal waters. In the form of bathing cures, it is quite suitable for treating locomotor and inflammatory gynaecological diseases. The drinking cure treats the gastro-enteric symptoms, and also the vaporized and inhalatory forms in the case of respiratory diseases.
Lipót’s main touristic attraction is the wholly renovated and extended thermal and scheme pools. The six pools are filled with water from 2000m deep and of 65 °C. Starting from the hotel, we walk on the right bank of the Danube as far as the beach of Moson and then where the River Lajta empties into the Moson Danube. From here, we go on the right bank of the Lajta up to Kiserdő Road, where after going over a bridge and along the Lajta we get to the Lajta Bridge at Whitman Park. Walking down Malomszer Road and Károly Street, we arrive in Fácános Street that also leads to the Moson Danube, to the Moson Beach. Proceeding on the right bank of the Danube, we will be back at the starting point, the hotel.
2nd walk: exploring the sights of Mosonmagyaróvár
The sightseeing walk can be started at the Castle of Óvár. Going through the old gate of the castle, we can take a walk in the park viewing the buildings of the castle and the university. From here, we get to Deák Square, where the building of the Old Mill and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk can be found. In the square, the one-storey building of the Habsburgs’ archducal palace is situated and at the end of Magyar Street, a statue is erected in memory of Frederic Habsburg. The sightseeing continues in Main Street, where there are several dwelling houses built in baroque style with lovely inner yards. We pass the Town Hall as far as Cselley House which is the oldest and the most charming dwelling house in the town.
From Cselley House crossing Városház Street, we arrive in the pedestrian area that is Magyar Street. Saint Gotthard Parish Church stands here. On the way from Magyaróvár to Moson, the Hansági Museum can be found opposite the town hospital.
Moving towards Moson, the Presbyterian Church can be seen. The famous violinist and music teacher, Charles Flesch, was born at 123 Saint Stephen Street. In the same street, Saint John’s Parish Church and the statue of Saint Stephen in front of it can be found. In the industrial area of the town, Mourning Square is a symbolic cemetery commemorating the victims of the volley-firing on 26th October 1956.
1st tour: short hike at the barrage
Leaving the clearing at Vadvíz Campsite, for the dam weir, we can see the sluicing. Here we can look at the C variant, which are the Slovakian dams of the diverted Danube. Turning north, we go on a gravel road on the left bank but upstream the Old Danube up to the barrage, where we take a turn and walk back to the car waiting for us.
2nd tour: medium-length tour in Cikolasziget to the fish pass called Denkpáli
We start by car from Danube Street, Cikolasziget. Then we proceed eastward on the dike, and turning right we head for Nyáras-Island. Getting through the dam here, we are on the stone dam on the left bank of the island where the fish pass can be watched as well. Then turning right, we can get to the dam on a farm road from where back to the starting point in Cikolasziget.
3rd tour: walk on the educational path of Lipót (two hours long)
The starting point is the Holt-Duna Campsite in Lipót. First we head for Dunaremete. At the end of the village, we turn right and next to the lake of Remete getting over the dike, we reach the landing place of Remete. From there, we proceed back towards the dike where at the first ramp down on the left, we walk back to Lipót. Passing a grassy field, we turn right reaching the bank of the Dead Danube. Along the bank, we are back at the campsite.
4th tour: the preserve of Hédervár
To get to the preserve, the most practical is to start from the main entrance of the castle when we go on the left of a nice park opposite and across Hársfa Street. Then we walk along a line of trees in the north of the then count’s peacock farm. Six avenues of this kind meet in the middle of the forest which is supplemented by a walking path of roughly round-shaped. Since the level is a bit higher here due to the cares of the count and the villagers, this northern part of the forest is quite suitable for outings even in wet conditions.
The Kárászos Brook winds in the forest through more than two km. It is an especially amazing walk in the shadows of the many trees. There is a relatively big clearing in the middle of the forest where the six avenues come together.
Turning right at the clearing, we can walk down the south-western avenue up to the other ferro-concrete bridge over the stream, where turning left after the bridge we can reach the estuary of the Moson Danube in a few minutes along the narrow path at the stream. Standing under the big tree there, you can get a view of hundreds of meters of the windings of the river, the reeds and gallery forests.
